Giraffe-necked Weevil, Trachelophorus giraffa
Mantadia National Park
Surely one of the world's most bizarre-looking insects, this Madagascar endemic has a total body length of 2.5 cm. (1 inch). In males the neck is 2 to 3 times longer than in females, and they use it in fighting contests to win mates. The female uses her shorter neck and powerful legs to roll up a large leaf and folds over the end to create a nest for her single egg. The leaf roll is then snipped off and falls to the forest floor, where the egg develops.
