Tiritiri Matangi Island. The Takahe is a large flightless member of the rail family weighing up to 3 kg. Mainly vegetarian, these birds once grazed by the thousands in New Zealand grasslands. Thought to have become extinct in 1898, a few were re-discovered in the Murchison Mountains, South Island in 1948. A captive breeding program and translocation of some birds to predator-free islands has brought the population to about 263 birds as of 2013 .
