    Arthur's Pass, South Island. This native flightless rail is found on both the North and South Islands, but is much more common on the South Island. It is quite large, at 53 cm in length and about 1 kg in weight for males.

    Takahe

    Tiritiri Matangi Island. The Takahe is a large flightless member of the rail family weighing up to 3 kg. Mainly vegetarian, these birds once grazed by the thousands in New Zealand grasslands. Thought to have become extinct in 1898, a few were re-discovered in the Murchison Mountains, South Island in 1948. A captive breeding program and translocation of some birds to predator-free islands has brought the population to about 263 birds as of 2013 .
